Cleaning and Maintenance

We referred to the Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) for the best advice for carpet care.

  • Vacuum regularly, make several passes in varying directions, especially in high traffic areas. Empty the vacuum bag when it’s full to maintain its efficiency. Investing in a good quality vacuum is important.
  • Quickly address spots and spills with a spot cleaner and using a blot technique. Do not use harsh cleaners like bleach that will damage the carpet or cause it to resoil. Most manufacturers recommend SOA certified cleaners. Find out more about SOA.
  • Have your carpets professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months.
  • Use mats inside and outside your doors. Removing your shoes at the door will also help reduce dirt and grime from tracking in the house.

We referred to the Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) for the best advice for spot cleaning.

First step: blot spills with a clean dry white cloth. Do not use colored or printed clothes as they may bleed into the carpet. Scoop up semi-solids without rubbing them deeper into the carpet. Dry solids can be vacuumed however, use the vacuum hose to clean up the loose bits.

Next: treat the spot with a cleaner. We recommend a CRI Certified Seal of Approval carpet cleaning product. Always test the cleaner on a carpet sample prior to treating the spot.

Follow the product’s directions and apply the cleaner with a white cloth gently working in from the edges of the stain. You may need to repeat this process several times. After the spot is gone, blot the area with clear water to remove any remaining cleaning product.

We referred to the Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) for cleaning tips for pet owners.

  • Use CRI Certified Seal of Approval carpet cleaning products designed for pet stains and odors.
  • Promptly clean up any messes and follow the steps for spot removal.
  • Have your carpet professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months or more if necessary.
  • Do not use a steam cleaner to clean urine spots. The heat will set the stain and the odor. Extract the urine with a wet-vac and lightly rinse the spot with cold water.

Stain Protection

No! Wool carpet is naturally resistant to dirt, spills and stains. However, there are several different stain protection products that have been developed to improve the life of your carpet by reducing absorbency and helping to resist permanent staining.

Most new carpets come with a factory-applied protectant but this can wear off over time. Reapplying a protectant on your carpets can help resist stains and soiling, so your carpets will stay cleaner longer.

Yes, it is recommended for all natural fiber carpets and rugs. A spray-on sealant, can be applied to your rugs in your home. It acts as a barrier to reduce the rate at which sisal absorbs liquid. There is no gaurantee that your sisal will never stain, but it will reduce the chances should a spill occur.

Water Damage and Mold

Have a professional restoration service extract the water and set up drying fans, ideally within 24 hours. If the flood water is contaminated with sewage or other contaminants, it is recommended to dispose of the carpet and pad.

Yes, it is recommended to replace any areas of padding that was soaked.

The carpet should be professionally cleaned by a restoration cleaning service to ensure all mold is eliminated.

It is recommended that contaminated carpet be disposed properly by a professional restoration service.

Mold needs moisture to grow. As long any carpet including carpets made of natural fibers are kept clean and dry, there should not be a mold problem.

Indoor Air Quality

If you have asthma or allergies you should request that the adhesive comply with the CRI Green Label Plus emissions. These adhesives have the lowest possible emissions. Good ventilation for approximately 48 to 72 hours should alleviate most odors.

Pad sample with the Green Label Plus logo have the lowest possible chemical emissions. Felt pad generally has low chemical emissions. Good ventilation during the installation process and for approximately 48 to 72 hours should alleviate most orders associated with the installation.

Most “off-gasing” of new carpet is complete within the first 24 hours. Carpet odors should dissipate with proper ventilation and good air exchange for approximately 48 to 72 hours.

Carpet Repair

Yes we can. First we determine the root of the problem and address any issues we find that need repair. We then use professional power stretching tools to ensure that your carpet is installed properly and free of ripples.

Absolutely, providing you have extra carpet we can patch holes and rips in your carpet, no matter how large the damaged area is.

Examine the snagged yarn. If it's less than 1/2" long, cut it off with a pair of scissors flush with the base of the carpet pile. If you have a woven carpet or special hand woven carpet we recommend that you schedule to have Eagle Carpet Service repair your carpet.

Yes, most carpet seams can be repaired as long as the fibers are not completely worn. Tightly woven carpets or flat weaved carpets do not seam well due to their chacteristics.

Carpet Installations

The best way to prepare for carpet installation is to remove all of your small loose items from the tops of furniture. Remove any and all breakable items from the inside of the furniture. Closets should be empty, the bottom row of clothing and long garments, including low shoe racks should be removed. Disconnect your electronics. Rather than putting things on top of your furniture or bed, move loose items to a room that isn't going to be carpeted. It is also important that any pets be out of the work areas.

The installers will need an area to place the new carpet and their tools during the installation. Our installers use protective blankets or pads to put their tools on. If you are having old carpet removed it will create some dust and the installation can cause a bit of noise and vibration. Eagle Carpet Service vacuums after the installation and hauls away all of the garbage within a 24 hour period.

We prefer that someone of authority be present at the start of project to go over any details of the installation. Some projects require options to be determined on site. You do not need to stay once the installation has started. You should be available for contact in case other questions arise.

If there is a large pattern in your carpet, extra carpet is needed to match the pattern. In some cases extra carpet is ordered to minimize seams. Carpet comes in standard widths of 12 to 15 feet wide and must be layed in the same direction. Depending on the dimensions of the room and where the seams are placed the amount of extra carpet will vary.

Using scissors, cut the yarn flush with surface of the carpet and let the surrounding yarn fill in the space. Do not pull out long or loose ends as this can damage your carpet.

It you paint prior to the installation you will likely need to have your painter come back for light touch up. We highly recommend to wait until after the installation to apply faux finishes and wall paper. Most carpet backings are abraisive that can scuff paint or tear wall paper.

To avoid gaps between your carpet and the walls, the baseboards should be placed no more than 3/8" above the floor. No matter the thickness of the carpet this space will provide the best results.

Padding For Carpet and Rugs

Definitely yes! Rug pads prevent shifting of the rug. Rug pads also increase the life of your rug and provide a softer walking surface. They also help with noise absorption. Eagle Carpet Service only carries the best quality pads recommended for area rugs and installations.

Typically most residential carpet applications require a cushion no more than 7/16” inch thick with a minimum 6 pound density. Berber, low looped carpet and flat weaves require a thinner cushion with an 8 pound density. Most manufacturers have their recommendations for a specific product to ensure the longevity of the carpet. For more information on what to use, you can view the padding we recommend.

A higher grade pad will help a carpet to feel softer and perform better. The carpet cushion, or padding, is what supports the carpet and provides longevity and performance of your carpet.

Carpet pad with an 8 lb. density, provides an excellent feel underfoot, protects your floors, and extends the life of your carpet all at an affordable price.

Woven carpets, flat-weaves and other looped carpets require a firm dense type of pad. The answer is usually a felt pad.

A low dense pad is recommended for stairs. Most carpets require a 7/16" felt pad while thinner carpets require a 1/4" felt pad.

Non-skid felt pads are the best choice for area rugs. You can view our selection of rug pads to see what we recommend.

Stair Runners

A low, dense pile carpet is the most forgiving on stairs. Sisal, berber, woven and loop-pile carpets all contain looped fibers. Good quality carpets that use heavier yarns and fibers and have a tight weave can withstand tears and pulls and out perform thicker plusher carpets.

Stair and hall runners do not have to match. However, you do want the stair and hall runners to coordinate with one another.

All of the area rugs you can see from a single spot in your home should complement each other.

Stair runners come in many widths varying from 24" to 48" wide. The most common width is 27" for a standard staircase. Consider how much wood you want to see on the sides of the runner. An average margin of 3" to 4" on either side of the runner is usually aesthetically pleasing.

Yes, stair runners can be installed on winding stairs. There are variuos methods that apply depending on the carpet and the staircase. In some cases, a margin is determined and maintained on each side. Where as standard width stair runners are kept centered while ignoring the margin.

Stair rods are purely aesthetic and are not recommended for fitting stair carpets or runners. It is recommended that your carpet is installed by professionals. Fitting your carpet correctly increases its lifespan and improves the safety of your stair case.

Binding & Edgings

We can replace any finished edge in need of repair. We have several options of edgings you can apply to your rug that will help revive its appearance. In most cases we can match the same edging or provide a very similar look.

We have several options of edgings you can apply to your rug that include machine binding, serging and custom finishes.

Binding is the most economical way of securing the carpet edges from raveling while at the same time enhancing the appearance of your rug. We only stock top-quality cotton tape in a wide range of colors.

For aesthetic reasons the binding should not excede 2 1/2". The most popular width is typically 1 1/4". Depending on the thickness and flexiblity of the binding combined with the quality of carpet may determine your options.

The most common reason borders are wavy is due to the characteristics of the carpet and the binding itself. Stitching thicker carpets causes the border fabric to draw up and wrinkle.

Carpets & Characteristics

Due to advanced manufacturing technology, 90% of all carpet produced today is tufted. Tufted carpet is made by inserting yarn through a primary backing. An adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is then glued on for strength and stability.

During the process of manufacturing woven carpet, the yarn is woven through or around vertical fibers known as warps, and then locked into place with horizontal strands known as wefts. This process creates a variety of rich colors and intricate patterns. Carpets are primarily woven of wool and are very durable.

A traditional Wilton weave carpet is processed on a Jacquard loom. The yarn or pile threads run continuously through the carpet and are raised above the surface of the integral backing by means of wires or hooks. A high-quality Wilton may be made with 252 pitch and 8 to 10 wires per inch, with a lighter or heavier yarn to provide density.

Axminster carpet is produced on a Jacquard loom that offers unique flexibilities in colors and design. Each tuft is individually woven into place allowing even the most complex and intricate designs to be created with pinpoint precision and high-definition. Axminster carpets offer architects and end-users distinct advantages over any other available flooring surface on the market in terms of aesthetics, performance and value.
